What is a dental crown?

A dental crown, or cap, is a prosthetic piece that restores the shape and function of a damaged tooth. The crown can be used to restore a broken tooth or a tooth with significant decay or replace a missing tooth with a dental implant.

The crown is specially made to fit the entire tooth, starting from the gum line, to return the tooth to its original shape and size.

What are dental crowns made of?

Crowns are made of different types of materials. In the early days of dentistry, they were made of metals such as stainless steel.

There are several types of dental crowns. These can be:
- gold dental crowns
- full-ceramic dental crowns
- ceramic crowns on zirconium
- Emax dental crowns
- composite dental crowns
- metal-ceramic crowns (ceramic fused to metal)

Generally, ceramic crowns or porcelain teeth as they are also called, are the most common option, because they match the color and natural appearance of your teeth better.

Metal-ceramic crowns are used less often because the tooth must be polished to a greater thickness than a crown zirconium dental crown or Emax crown.  And the aesthetic results are not as good as in the case of all-ceramic crowns.

At Dr. Baldea Dental Clinic, we most often recommend ceramic dental crowns on a zirconium support or Emax dental crowns (all-ceramic). Due to their resistance and appearance, ceramic crowns offer a better color match than other materials. It is also healthier for those with metal allergies.

One of the most common procedures in our dental clinic is the placement of a dental crown.

Why we recommend dental crowns:

To cover a dental implant or post.

For a cosmetic change to your smile.

To protect a broken tooth or a chipped tooth.

To cover misshapen teeth or discolored teeth.

To protect a tooth weakened by decay or to hold together parts of a cracked tooth.

To protect an already broken tooth from further damage.

To bond a dental bridge.

To improve a misshapen tooth.

For protecting the tooth, including after root canal treatment, when the tooth nerve has been removed.

For changing old dental work.
Classically cemented prosthetic work is changed every 8-10 years because the cement with which they are fixed suffers microcracks, and bacteria can penetrate under the work. The risk of caries of the abutment is increased and the longer the time, the greater the risk of losing the tooth.

What is the best dental crown for you?

We don't know. I don't think there is a good dentist who can recommend something to you without analysis and without discussing it with you.
We care about each of your teeth as if it were our own.
How Dental aesthetics and prosthetics go hand in hand and because we don't perform treatments that just look good, we protect the existing teeth and ensure that the treatment is aligned with the highest dental standards.

Prosthetic diagnosis

In order to make a correct diagnosis and then a prosthetic treatment plan, a set of analyses is needed to be able to make the diagnosis. All investigations, including dental X-rays or fingerprints, will be done in our clinic.

Based on the analyses, after we treat and prepare the teeth, we will create a temporary dental crown. Based on the provisional works, the function and aesthetics are tested before the execution of the final works. As an intermediate stage of the treatment, it helps to heal the tissues and protect the teeth.

In the courses that we support both in the country and in Timisoara, in high-performance dental prosthetics, we emphasize the fact that each stage must be respected. It is the way of working that we teach other dentists.

Any shortcut to treatment can do more harm than good.

How long do dental crowns last?

Dental crowns last between ten and fifteen years, depending on your oral health habits and the wear and tear they are subjected to. They can last even longer with proper care.
After we fix your dental crown, we recommend that you stay away from chewing certain hard foods, biting your nails, or opening packages with your teeth.  This will help the crown last as long as possible.
